RIA Novosti. MOSCOW. (RIA Novosti political commentator Tatyana Sinitsyna) - Residents of Zheleznogorsk, a city with a population of 100,000 in the Siberian taiga, have written a new page in the history of the national nuclear power industry.

The National Legal Internet Portal of the Republic of Belarus. Trade between Belarus and Kaliningrad region amounted to $74 million in January-February, or 4,5 times up over the same period last year. In terms of trade of Belarus with Russia’s regions Kaliningrad region rose from the 25th place to the 10th, the chief of the Kaliningrad branch of the Embassy to Belarus in Russia, Vladimir Zalomai, told BelTA.

Russia Today. The Curonian spit is a long thin peninsula north of Russia’s Kaliningrad. This national park separates the Baltic Sea from the Curonian lagoon. Half belongs to Russia, the other half to Lithuania. The six resorts along the Lithuanian stretch are crammed with hotels, bars and restaurants, while the Russian part is underdeveloped.

Russia Today. Russia’s westernmost area, the Kaliningrad region, is dubbed ‘The Land of Amber’. It is a unique deposit of Baltic Gold - a natural treasure ascribed magical qualities. The region boasts 90 per cent of the world’s amber reserves.

Vremya Novostei. Elvira Nabiullina, Russian Minister of Economic Development and Trade recently signed an additional agreement defining borders of the special tourism and recreation zone on the territory of “Kurinian Spit” reserve in Kaliningrad region. This agreement automatically changes the initial concept of Kaliningrad tourism zone.

RUGRAD.EU. Seminar on the prospects of golf in Kaliningrad region was held by the Golf Association of Russia for representatives of the region’s municipalities.

The Baltic Times. VILNIUS - An announcement by Moscow that it intended to build two nuclear reactors in the Kaliningrad region triggered dismay and alarm in neighboring Lithuania, which is struggling to get plans for its own atomic power plant off the ground.

Avtorynok Kaliningrada. Last week a rally of 1,500 Avtotor’s employees was held in front of Kaliningrad City Administration, caused by the intention of the Russian government to limit Avtotor’s annual production quota to 10,000 vehicles and (possibly) to deprive the enterprise of customs duty benefits it is currently enjoying.

Casino Gambling Web. The Russian government has in place a plan that would move existing casino operations to more remote parts of the country. The move was set to go into place before June of 2009.

Yantarny Krai. Governor of Kaliningrad Region, Georgy Boos, had a meeting with Marian Podziewski, Voivoda of Warmia-Mazury Voivodeship of Poland, on Friday, April 18.
