Kaliningrad artists' amber exhibition in Louvre

2010 is the Russia-France crossover year. One of its events is an exhibition of amber artworks from the Russian most northwest Kaliningrad region in the Louvre.

Each November the Louvre opens a Salon of national cultural heritage. For Russian artists it is very prestigious to take part in it. In 1979 a museum of amber opened in Kaliningrad – not unique, but the world's largest. One can see amber from elsewhere here – the Baltic countries, Scandinavia, Japan, South America – and, of course, the Kaliningrad region itself, for 90% of the world's amber is produced here. It is the Kaliningrad artists who restored the famous Amber room of the Empress Catherine's palace in the suburbs of St. Petersburg that was destroyed by Nazis during the WWII.
