Navigation at Kaliningrad (Vistula) bay is gradually developing

Since the resumption of navigation at Kaliningrad (Vistula) bay on Kaliningrad-Elblag route 5 thousand tons of coal was transported. At that moment, according to SeaNews information agency, coal is the only commodity carried through the bay as part of international traffic. The Kaliningrad region ranks 25th among Russian regions by quality of life

The Institute of Regional Information has compiled a rating of Russian regions by the quality of life. According to the study, since 2006 the Kaliningrad region lost 11 positions moving from the 14th place to the 25th. On the other hand, in Q1 2009 Kaliningrad was only 30th, so compared to the previous year the relative standard of living in the region has improved. Read full text at Kaliningrad RDA website...

Avianova, a budget airline, plans to launch flight on Kaliningrad direction in Autumn

Budget airline "Avianova" intends to launch flights from Moscow and St. Petersburg to Kaliningrad. The exact dates have not been announced yet. Ibis Hotel will open in the Kaliningrad region in the next two years

The construction of an Ibis Hotel is planned to be finished in Kaliningrad in the next two years. The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) are planning to provide the funding, RIA Novosti reports. Apart from Kaliningrad, hotels will be built in Russian cities of Samara, Yaroslavl and Krasnoyarsk. Overall, EBRD and IFC plan to invest 50 million euros in the project. The State Duma of Russia has ratified five agreements on border cooperation programmes. In particular, the agreement between the Government of Russia and the European Community on funding and implementation of the programme of cross-border cooperation "Lithuania-Poland-Russia" defines the foundations of relations between Russia and the EU under the programme carried out within the framework of the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI). Kaliningrad artists' amber exhibition in Louvre

2010 is the Russia-France crossover year. One of its events is an exhibition of amber artworks from the Russian most northwest Kaliningrad region in the Louvre.

Each November the Louvre opens a Salon of national cultural heritage. For Russian artists it is very prestigious to take part in it. In 1979 a museum of amber opened in Kaliningrad – not unique, but the world's largest. One can see amber from elsewhere here – the Baltic countries, Scandinavia, Japan, South America – and, of course, the Kaliningrad region itself, for 90% of the world's amber is produced here. It is the Kaliningrad artists who restored the famous Amber room of the Empress Catherine's palace in the suburbs of St. Petersburg that was destroyed by Nazis during the WWII. Construction of a new crossing point at the border of the Kaliningrad region and Poland completed

France and Germany will help Kaliningrad residents to visit border areas of Poland visa-free

France and Germany will contribute to the adoption of the EU directive, which would allow residents of the Kaliningrad region of Russia to travel to border areas of Poland, which belongs to the Schengen zone, without a visa. This was announced by the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, on Wednesday, June 23.

Container turnover at the port of Kaliningrad has grown 2.6 times YoY

By the results of the first four months of 2010 container turnover at the port of Kaliningrad has grown 2.6 times and reached 48 599 TEU. According to SeaNews, in April 16,377 TEU passed through the dock of the port. This figure is 3.7 times higher than that in 2009. In comparison with March the growth rate is 23.9%.

Wireless Internet provider Scartel to enter the Kaliningrad region

Scartel (operating under Yota trademark) is preparing to enter the Kaliningrad market. According to IP-News with reference to its own source, the operator began construction of base stations in Kaliningrad. The company has already completed designing a number of stations, construction work began, and before the summer it is scheduled to start operation of the first ten stations.

The first phase of a five-star "Schloss Hotel" in Yantarny municipality of the Kaliningrad region will be completed in the second quarter of 2011. The corresponding investment agreement was signed on Friday, May 28, in Yantarny at the opening of the 4th Kaliningrad Economic Forum by the Head of Yantarny municipality, Alexander Blinov, and a representative of "Syr" company, Nikolay Vlasenko.

Kaliningrad is 12th in Forbes' list of Russian cities best for business

Forbes has published the new rating of the Russian cities best for business. According to the magazine, Kaliningrad is regaining positions lost during the crisis: in 2010 the city took the 12th place in the top 30, while in 2008 it was second, and in 2009 in the wake of the developing crisis it was left out of the list altogether.
